Iloilo city: Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Julienne Baronda has emphasized the necessity for bolstering the government's Kadiwa ng Pangulo program, executed by the Department of Agriculture (DA). During a press conference on Tuesday, Baronda highlighted the potential impact of rising fuel prices, due to the Middle East crisis, on basic commodities.
According to Philippines News Agency, Baronda pointed out that Kadiwa centers offer their produce at more affordable rates compared to market prices. She stated, "If we strengthen the Kadiwa, we are giving our consumers an option. Not only will consumers benefit, but local farmers will benefit as well." This initiative is seen as crucial, especially as some transient vendors from Iloilo province face challenges with adjustments at the Iloilo City public market.
Baronda emphasized the importance of preventing price hikes for basic commodities in both the city and the province of Iloilo, citing the risk of supply shortages. She is scheduled to meet with officials of DA 6 (Western Visayas) this week to discuss the necessary support for the Kadiwa program and other initiatives.
The Kadiwa ng Pangulo is a key program of the Marcos administration aimed at addressing the issue of rising food prices. It provides platforms for farmers, fisherfolk, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to sell their produce directly, thereby facilitating market linkages and eliminating unnecessary layers in the trading cycle.
