Iloilo City Allocates PHP3 Million Fuel Subsidy for Public Utility Vehicle Drivers

Iloilo city: The local government has allocated an initial PHP3 million to subsidize fuel costs for approximately 1,700 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers. This measure comes in anticipation of a potential fuel price hike due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Raisa Tre±as announced that the city is working on an immediate relief response for drivers, with expectations that fuel prices could rise to PHP90 per liter. The plan includes providing fuel subsidies through a coupon system. Initially, the program will focus on jeepney drivers, with plans to expand to include taxi and tricycle drivers.

Under this subsidy program, eligible drivers and operators will receive PHP1,500 worth of petroleum products each month, with the distribution managed through their respective transport cooperatives. For taxi and tricycle drivers, the subsidy amounts being considered range from PHP500 to PHP1,500 once the program expands.

To qualify for the subsidy, drivers must be actual residents of Iloilo City, hold a valid driver's license, and operate along the city routes. Operators are required to possess a Certificate of Public Convenience or franchise, and their PUVs must be listed in the validated master list of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Tre±as emphasized that this fuel subsidy is an initial relief package aimed at supporting PUV drivers. The city is also exploring ways to assist displaced workers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Currently, the necessary documents are being finalized, and the program will undergo a bidding process. In the meantime, data collection for qualified drivers and operators is underway to expedite the processing of their documents.

Once the budget is approved and the coupons are prepared, distribution will commence. The Atipan center will play a role in coordinating with drivers and operators for the distribution process. The fuel subsidy coupons are valid until December 31, 2026, subject to fund availability.
