Ilocos norte: The Ilocos Norte Provincial Health Office (PHO) has emphasized the need for proactive measures to combat dengue to continue the province's record of zero deaths from the disease. Despite this achievement, the latest data reveals an increase in dengue cases, with the number rising to 443 compared to 272 in the same period last year. The majority of these cases have been observed in the cities of Laoag and Batac, along with several towns including Solsona, Sarrat, Dingras, Piddig, Badoc, Banna, Bacarra, and Paoay.
According to Philippines News Agency, PHO chief Dr. Rickson Balalio stressed the importance of public vigilance and the implementation of the 5S strategy to curb the spread of dengue. The Department of Health's 5S strategy includes: searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, adopting self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, supporting fogging operations only in hotspots with two consecutive weeks of increased cases, and maintaining proper hydration.
Dr. Balalio emphasized that dengue is a preventable disease, with cleanliness and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites being the most effective preventive measures. In support of these efforts, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has approved a PHP9.9 million budget for 2026. This funding is sourced from the province's 5 percent disaster risk reduction and management fund, along with unutilized funds from 2025.
Marcell Tabije, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), stated that 70 percent of the allocated funds will be dedicated to prevention and response initiatives, while the remaining 30 percent will be reserved as a quick-response fund for emergencies. A significant portion of the budget will be allocated to purchasing battery-operated backpack sprayers and misting machines for distribution to local government units throughout Ilocos Norte.
