Ilocos Norte:The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has ramped up dengue surveillance and response efforts in Ilocos Norte following two dengue-related fatalities. District hospitals have activated dengue fast lanes to expedite the assessment and treatment of suspected cases.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Rickson Balalio, the provincial health officer, announced these measures during a media interview on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of preventing further loss of life. He stressed the need for early medical attention and reinforced that while the rising cases are concerning, they have not yet declared an outbreak.
Dr. Balalio explained that the fast lanes in district hospitals aim to streamline patient assessment and facilitate prompt medical intervention for those showing signs of dengue. The deaths in the towns of Piddig and Nueva Era have prompted health authorities to enhance surveillance across the province.
Enhanced monitoring helps in identifying areas with increasing dengue cases, allowing officials and local governments to implement community interventions more swiftly. These interventions may include information campaigns, mosquito breeding site elimination, and targeted cleanup activities in affected areas.
Dengue typically starts with symptoms like high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Serious concerns arise when warning signs develop, particularly as the fever starts to subside. Residents are urged to seek immediate medical care if they experience severe symptoms, such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, extreme weakness, rapid breathing, or blood in vomit or stool, with special attention to children with persistent fever or unusual weakness.
From January to September, Ilocos Norte recorded 1,858 dengue cases, with Laoag City reporting the highest number at 204. Other affected areas include Dingras with 193 cases, and both Pagudpud and Solsona with 147 cases each. Batac City has reported 142 cases. Notably, the small town of Adams remains dengue-free this year.
