Ilocos Norte Filipino-Chinese Communities Celebrate Year of Fire Horse

Ilocos norte: Filipino-Chinese communities across Ilocos Norte welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse on Tuesday with traditional performances, festive gatherings, and cultural observances in commercial establishments and households. At SM City Laoag, dragon and lion dance performers entertained mallgoers, while the Tambureros-a traditional Chinese percussion group-performed to drive away evil and draw good fortune. Tikoy, a sticky rice cake symbolizing prosperity and family unity, was shared among friends and community partners.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Lunar New Year is widely celebrated across the country, particularly within Filipino-Chinese communities, and is traditionally marked by family gatherings, cultural festivities, and prayers for prosperity. In a statement, Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos extended her greetings to the Filipino-Chinese community, recognizing their vital role in local development and economic growth. "Wishing everyone a prosperous, peaceful, and healthy year of the horse. May this new year bring new opportunities, joy, and success to you and your loved ones," she said.

She also welcomed Li Xiaoyan, the new Chinese consul and head of post at the Chinese Consulate in Laoag, expressing hope for strengthened bonds of friendship and cooperation between Ilocos Norte and China. Ilocos Norte maintains close ties with China, including a sisterhood relationship with Shandong province. Consul Xiaoyan recently paid courtesy visits to schools and local government units in Ilocos Norte and nearby provinces.
