Iligan city: The city government of Iligan has reached out to the national government, including President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., for support in implementing its drainage master plan aimed at preventing future flooding incidents.
According to Philippines News Agency, Councilor Derrick Thomas Siao announced the passage of a resolution that seeks assistance from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to help fund the master plan, which is estimated to cost PHP936.6 million for the local government's share alone. This initiative is a response to the aftermath of Tropical Storm Basyang, which led to the declaration of a state of calamity in Iligan City.
Siao expressed hopes that the master plan would enhance the city's drainage infrastructure, thereby preventing future flooding and ensuring the safety of residents. During a recent visit to Iligan City, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon instructed the regional office and the Lone District Engineering Office to expedite "Oplan Kontra Baha," a project aimed at addressing flood issues.
Dizon's visit highlighted the challenges faced by Barangay Mandulog, where floodwaters from the Mandulog River threatened the area due to gaps between the existing flood control project and the new Mandulog bridge. He urged contractors to complete necessary repairs and projects before the onset of the next rainy season.
Maricel Cadampug, a resident of Barangay Lanipao, shared her experience of having to travel with her husband on a motorcycle to buy food, navigating through the Mandulog Bridge, which currently has a temporary approach.
