Homonhon Island Residents Get Clean Water After Years of Scarcity

Guiuan: Residents of a small village in historic Homonhon Island in Guiuan, Eastern Samar now have access to a reliable source of clean and safe water following the inauguration of a new community water supply system, officials announced Monday. The project in Barangay Casuguran addresses years of water scarcity in the remote community, where families previously relied on limited deep wells, rivers, or costly water deliveries from the mainland.

According to Philippines News Agency, Guiuan Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan stated that the initiative will bring immediate improvements to residents' quality of life. "This is an important project that signals not only development for the island but dignity for the community," she said during the inauguration. Kwan highlighted that the system will benefit around 300 residents by providing consistent access to potable water, significantly easing daily living conditions.

The newly completed facility is a Level II community water system designed to distribute water through communal tap stands placed across the barangay. It includes a dam with a 60,000-liter capacity, an ultra-filtration unit capable of processing up to 10 cubic meters of water per hour, and a 10,000-liter storage tank. A pipeline network stretching about 5,000 meters connects the system to multiple access points.

Barangay Casuguran is the first site under the broader Homonhon Island Water Supply System Project, which is expected to expand to seven more barangays in the area. The project was implemented through a partnership between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Water Resources Management Office, which provided PHP1 million in funding, and the Guiuan Water District.

It also received support from private mining firms operating on the island under their Social Development and Management Program, including Techiron Resources, Verum Terra Geoscience Inc., Global Min-Met Resources Inc., and Emir Mineral Resources Corp. Residents have been urged to take part in maintaining the facility to ensure its long-term sustainability.
