Manila: The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) raised its funeral benefit from PHP30,000 to PHP50,000.
According to Philippines News Agency, the higher one-time assistance covers claims involving deaths occurring on or after July 13, 2026, providing families added support at a time when they are coping with both loss and immediate expenses. GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso stated, "Every family deserves support and dignity when they lose someone they love," emphasizing that the increase enables the pension fund to support members' families "at the exact moment they need us most."
Approximately 21,000 to 25,000 families nationwide are expected to receive the funeral benefit each year, with GSIS allocating up to PHP1.25 billion annually to maintain the higher payout. The benefit is available to qualified active members, separated members entitled to future separation or retirement benefits, old-age pensioners, and certain retirees under Republic Act Nos. 1616 and 8291.
The PHP50,000 benefit will be paid to a single qualified claimant, prioritizing the legitimate spouse, followed by a legitimate child who covered the funeral costs. If neither is available, another individual may claim the benefit by presenting sufficient proof of having paid the funeral expenses. Claimants must submit the member's death certificate, a valid government-issued identification card, and other supporting documents required by GSIS. Non-spouse claimants must also provide proof of covering the funeral expenses.
This increase is part of GSIS' efforts to enhance support for public sector workers, pensioners, and their dependents under the government's broader social protection agenda.
