Ortigas: The government is making strides to cultivate an environment conducive to innovation, aiming to position the Philippines among the top one-third of global innovation economies by 2028, the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) announced.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippines has ascended to the 50th spot out of 139 economies on the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII), marking its highest position to date. This achievement places the country alongside other advancing middle-income economies such as China, India, Indonesia, Trkiye, Vietnam, Iran, Albania, and Morocco.
DEPDev, acting as the National Innovation Council (NIC) Secretariat, is concentrating on fostering an ecosystem that supports innovators. DEPDev Secretary Arsenio Balisacan emphasized the council’s focus on creating an environment that enables innovators to fully utilize their talents, skills, and expertise in innovation.
To promote innovation further, the government launched the Presidential Filipinnovation Awards, designed to celebrate innovation excellence and encourage broader engagement in the innovation ecosystem. Established through Executive Order 99, series of 2025, signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., the awards serve as the official innovation recognition of the Philippines.
Balisacan highlighted the awards as a key program in developing a dynamic innovation ecosystem that supports collaboration, creativity, and the advancement of local technologies. This year’s awards prioritize learning and education, food and agribusiness, and health and well-being.
A total of 12 finalists, along with three wildcard entries, have been selected for their innovative potential. On November 6, five will be honored as Filipinnovator Awardees of the Year, receiving cash grants and post-competition support packages worth up to PHP3.5 million. These packages include mentoring, participation in international events, and opportunities to connect with investors.
The initiative aims to harness the creativity and ingenuity of Filipinos, strengthening connections across government, industry, and academia to convert innovative ideas into practical applications that enhance lives and drive national progress, Balisacan stated.
