Quezon city: The government will adopt a "whole-of-nation approach" to ensure safety and smooth travel during Holy Week when millions are expected to troop to the provinces, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, authorities have been directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to prioritize guidance and prevention over penalties. Remulla highlighted that intoxication in beach areas is the leading cause of Holy Week fatalities. As part of the plan, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has placed all units on full alert, deploying 98,636 personnel nationwide. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that the alert status will remain until 11:59 p.m. on Easter Sunday, emphasizing the PNP's dual role in maintaining peace and order and being ready for emergency responses.
The PNP's efforts are bolstered by the support of 37,050 force multipliers and 12,507 augmentation units. Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez reported that approximately 150,000 passengers are expected daily at Ninoy Aquino International Airport this week. An estimated three million passengers will pass through the Para±aque Integrated Terminal Exchange and 2.6 million more through seaports from March 28 to April 5. Lopez urged travelers to plan ahead to avoid inconveniences and suggested purchasing tickets online to save time at ports.
The Philippine Coast Guard is also on full alert, with around 17,000 personnel deployed to secure transport hubs. In tandem with these measures, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon announced the temporary suspension of construction projects nationwide to facilitate travel. The suspension, which was ordered over the weekend, will last until Easter Sunday and is aimed at reducing fuel use amid rising costs and supply concerns linked to the Middle East conflict.
Holy Week is the country's most significant and busiest religious period, with millions traveling to provinces.
