Government Collaborates with Airlines to Slash Airfares and Boost Tourism

Manila: Malaca±ang has announced proactive measures to tackle the high domestic airfares that have been identified as a significant barrier to tourism competitiveness, especially in favored Philippine locales.

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro highlighted ongoing discussions about airfare pricing, emphasizing the disparity where certain domestic flights cost more than trips to other Southeast Asian destinations, such as the well-known island of Siargao. Castro pointed out the explanation provided by Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez through the Department of Transportation (DOTr), noting that the use of smaller aircraft on specific domestic routes is a primary factor for the increased fares. These smaller planes, accommodating only 60 to 70 passengers, incur operational costs similar to those of larger jets that can carry up to 200 individuals. Hence, reaching island destinations via smaller aircraft often results in relatively higher fares.

To address the issue, Castro mentioned that the DOTr has engaged in negotiations with major airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, which have agreed to reduce fares, including those for Siargao routes. Additionally, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) consistently prompts airlines to lower fuel surcharges when global fuel prices decline, thereby effectively cutting airfares.

Meanwhile, Castro underscored the government's commitment to enhancing tourism through initiatives like the Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) 2026, inaugurated in Cebu City with Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco at the helm. As the region's leading travel and trade platform, TRAVEX attracted 271 buyers from 50 countries, along with 124 Philippine sellers and 222 Southeast Asian exhibitors, aiming to link regional destinations to global markets.

The Palace official also noted the success of the ASEAN Tourism Forum opening in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, where First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Frasco extended a warm welcome to ASEAN tourism ministers and dialogue partners, further solidifying the administration's dedication to strengthening tourism.
