Manila: The Futsaliga has emerged as one of the most significant legacy and grassroots development initiatives of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF). The event has successfully cemented futsal as a key component of the nation's sports landscape.
According to Philippines News Agency, a crowd of 1,154 attended the final matches at the Philsports Arena on May 17, marking a high point for grassroots futsal in the Philippines. This milestone followed the country's successful hosting of the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup 2025. The tournament saw Beach Hut FC triumph over Silangan FC Cainta, Star FC over EMA Bulacan Highlanders, Far Eastern University over Beach Hut FC, and Azkals Development Club (ADC) over Enderun Colleges in their respective categories.
The Most Valuable Player awards were given to Azriella Casero, Franc Obias, Lenlen Cristobal, and Christian Gabriel Vendiola, highlighting the standout performers in each division. PFF President John Anthony Gutierrez underscored the birth of a nationwide futsal movement as one of the federation's significant accomplishments.
Gutierrez, in a news release, stated, "The success of the inaugural PFF Futsaliga proves that futsal has truly captured the imagination of Filipinos after the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup. What we witnessed over the last three months was the birth of a nationwide futsal movement powered by young players, schools, clubs, communities, families, and supporters who embraced the game with incredible passion."
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), particularly Chairman Patrick Gregorio, was praised for transforming the Philsports Arena into the country's House of Futsal. Gregorio commended Futsaliga for meeting international standards and continuing the momentum from the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup Philippines 2025.
Gregorio remarked, "The success of the recently concluded PFF Futsaliga is a clear continuation of the momentum generated by the historic staging of the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup Philippines 2025. That tournament proved that the Philippines is fully capable of hosting world-class sporting events that meet the highest international standards set by FIFA."
The PFF Futsaliga, which ran from February 28 to May 17, featured 476 players from 32 teams competing across four divisions. A total of 144 matches were played, demonstrating the league's competitiveness and growth. Online engagement was substantial, with livestreams and social media pages generating millions of views.
PSC Commissioner Fritz Gaston emphasized the role of futsal as a developmental platform for Philippine football and expressed hopes for the expansion of Futsaliga to Visayas and Mindanao. Gaston noted, "Futsal is a feeder program for football also. Hopefully, this won't just stay in Metro Manila or Luzon because the plan now is to bring Futsaliga to Visayas and Mindanao, and eventually have a national program."
