Manila: The Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), Line 2 (LRT-2), and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) are offering free rides for all passengers during the 128th celebration of Philippine Independence on June 12. All three rail services will provide free rides during peak hours from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on June 12.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the operator of the LRT-1, stated that the line traverses several historical locations and cultural destinations in Metro Manila, which is why it has been dubbed the 'Heritage Line.' The free ride initiative aims to facilitate public participation in Independence Day festivities and visits to cultural and tourist spots near stations, allowing Filipinos to reconnect with the nation's history.
Passengers with Beep cards will need to tap their cards at the turnstiles as usual and will not be charged to avail of the promo. Those without Beep cards can claim free single journey tickets at teller booths.
Philippine Independence Day is a national regular holiday, marked by official flag-raising ceremonies, parades, and other cultural events across the country. The day commemorates Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo's official declaration of Philippine Independence at his home in Kawit, Cavite, where the Philippine flag was officially unfurled for the first time.
