Tokyo: The estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan in August experienced a 9.6 percent decline from the previous year, amounting to 3,098,900 visitors, marking the first decrease in two months, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organization on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the decrease is attributed to the Chinese government's continuing advisory against travel to Japan for its citizens, compounded by flight cancellations due to a series of typhoons. The number of visitors from mainland China saw a significant drop of 59.0 percent, marking the ninth consecutive month of year-on-year decline.

The statistics also showed a decline in the number of Australian visitors, which fell by 7.4 percent to 38,200. This marks the second consecutive month of decline, as more Australians are opting out of international trips due to increasing living costs.

Despite these downturns, visitor numbers from 14 countries and regions, including Mexico, Indonesia, and India, reached record highs in August. Notably, arrivals from Italy and Spain also set single-month record highs, with 47,300 and 36,500 visitors, respectively.

In terms of visitors by country and region, South Korea led with the highest number of visitors to Japan, totaling 850,500, which is an increase of 28.7 percent. This was followed by Taiwan with 666,000 visitors, up by 7.3 percent, mainland China with 418,000, and Hong Kong with 247,300, which saw a 9.4 percent increase.
