Manila: Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre on Monday called for the immediate development and implementation of a comprehensive Food Resilience Plan to protect local food production and ensure stability in supply and prices amid the fuel crisis.
According to Philippines News Agency, Acidre emphasized that the ongoing fuel crisis is not just a transportation and energy problem, but also a food security issue that directly affects farmers and fishers. He highlighted that as fuel prices continue to climb, so do the costs associated with farming and fishing. This economic strain is causing many farmers and fishers to struggle with maintaining their operations. Acidre cautioned that a slowdown in production could lead to reduced supply, higher food prices, and increased vulnerability for Filipino families.
Acidre warned of the potential transition of the fuel crisis into a food crisis if decisive action is not taken. He proposed that the Food Resilience Plan include measures such as targeted fuel assistance for farmers and fishers to help lower production costs and sustain operations.
Furthermore, Acidre suggested that the government should accelerate investments in alternative energy solutions for agriculture and fisheries. This includes implementing solar-powered irrigation and energy-efficient technologies to reduce long-term dependence on volatile fuel prices.
He also urged the Department of Agriculture to improve access to various inputs, credit, post-harvest facilities, and efficient farm-to-market linkages to bolster local food production. Another critical aspect of the plan is the establishment and maintenance of strategic food reserves and enhanced logistics systems to ensure stable supply chains during external shocks.
Acidre stressed the importance of strong coordination between energy, agriculture, and economic agencies to ensure that government responses are unified, responsive, and focused on protecting both producers and consumers. He concluded by asserting that the needs of farmers and fishermen must not be overlooked as rising fuel prices continue to threaten food security.
