Pangasinan: The first Tour de Pangasinan cycling competition kicked off on Friday, coinciding with the country's 128th Independence Day. A total of 126 Pangasinense cyclists aged 16 years and above, grouped by district with seven members each, participated in the event that spanned 13 of the province's 48 localities.
According to Philippines News Agency, the race commenced in Umingan and proceeded through the towns of Balungao, Rosales, Villasis, Malasiqui, Bayambang, Basista, Urbiztondo, Mangataem, Aguilar, Bugallon, Labrador, and concluded in Lingayen, covering a distance of 143 kilometers. Governor Ramon Guico III noted that the event was organized to promote tourism, human development, and as part of a holistic approach to reduce criminality and drug use among the youth. Additionally, it serves as a platform to discover potential athletes for local and international competitions.
Governor Guico explained that the race route was shortened to exclude the western part of the province due to ongoing road constructions, which could lead to heavy traffic with the anticipated influx of tourists during the long weekend. The event also aims to stimulate local economies by drawing spectators, while promoting cycling as an alternative mode of transport and exercise, thus addressing energy concerns and encouraging healthier lifestyles.
Santy Barnachea, a 50-year-old participant, shared his personal testament to the health benefits of cycling, stating that it keeps him fit without the need for medication. He also credited cycling for his career in the Philippine Navy and encouraged the youth to adopt it as a hobby.
Governor Guico announced plans to make the Tour de Pangasinan an annual event. Overall coordinator Aji Cabrera highlighted that participants underwent drug tests and medical examinations to ensure their fitness for competition. Cabrera expressed enthusiasm for the future of cycling in Pangasinan, emphasizing grassroots training for upcoming competitions.
