Filipino-Chinese Community Celebrates Baguio’s Support for Chinese New Year

Baguio: The Filipino-Chinese community in this city has expressed gratitude to the local government for its support of the institutionalized Chinese New Year celebrations. This support is seen as a step towards deeper collaboration and fostering harmony between people of different cultures.

According to Philippines News Agency, Peter Ng, president of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCCI)-Baguio Benguet chapter, emphasized the importance of this partnership during the Chinese New Year annual media fellowship at the Hotel Supreme Mall and Events Center. Ng stated that the institutionalization of the celebration aims to promote better understanding and cooperation between the Filipino and Chinese communities, thereby strengthening their historical friendship and unity.

Ng highlighted that the celebration serves as a catalyst for building a closer and stronger bond between the Filipino and Chinese communities, advocating for unity, peace, and prosperity. Meanwhile, Councilor Yuri Weygan, representing the city government, expressed hope that the Chinese New Year would bring opportunities for growth, progress, and better understanding between different cultures.

The Spring Festival or Chinese New Year celebration in Baguio was institutionalized through Ordinance 8-1999, which established an annual city-wide celebration. The Year of the Fire Horse begins on February 17, declared by Malaca±ang as a special non-working holiday. The city government also suspends classes to allow students to participate in the festivities, which conclude with a gift-giving activity in barangays.
