Experts and Media Collaborate in Bicol to Clarify Geologic Hazard Terms

Bicol: Officials from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) have highlighted the urgent need for media practitioners and information officers to simplify technical data to enhance public safety measures. During the recent 'InfoPress' workshop, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol emphasized the challenge of translating complex scientific terms into understandable language, a task crucial for preventing panic and ensuring preparedness during disasters.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bacolcol identified common reporting errors, such as confusing earthquake magnitude with intensity, which can mislead the public. He stressed that beyond simplification, the localization and contextualization of hazard information are essential for it to be relevant to local decision-makers. Bacolcol also cautioned against the rapid dissemination of unverified claims on social media during active disasters, which can lead to public confusion. He reported that four volcanoes are currently under alert: Mayon at Level 3, Kanlaon at Level 2, and both Taal and Bulusan at Level 1.

Media practitioner Antonette Eduardo from RMN DWNX Naga expressed her reliance on expert guidance for accuracy when faced with unfamiliar scientific concepts. She pointed out that misunderstanding technical terms can result in misinterpretation and unnecessary public panic. "As media practitioners, it is our responsibility to disseminate information to the public. It is very important that we understand what we are reporting," Eduardo stated.

Phivolcs conducts the InfoPress workshop three times a year to fortify media engagement and disaster risk reduction efforts across the country. The agency is committed to providing educational materials and information to ensure consistent and accurate communication across all platforms.
