Manila: Former Surigao del Norte 2nd District Representative Robert Ace Barbers dismissed the circulating 'unsigned affidavit' associated with 18 individuals identified as former Marines, labeling it a manufactured narrative intended to damage reputations. Barbers, who chaired the House Quad Committee in the 19th Congress, called on lawyer Levi Baligod and his clients to formally validate their claims through proper signatures and notarization before seeking public acknowledgment of their accusations.

According to Philippines News Agency, Barbers challenged Baligod, emphasizing that an unsigned affidavit holds no merit and urging the accusers to authenticate their statements to avoid comparisons to a scripted drama. Barbers criticized the lack of diligence in ensuring the affidavit's notarization, suggesting that Baligod's actions appear more aligned with opportunism than advocacy.

The controversy arose after the alleged former Marines, during a press conference with Baligod, claimed they transported cash in suitcases to public officials. This sparked denials from the accused parties and counterclaims suggesting the timing is politically driven. House leaders and former Makabayan bloc lawmakers labeled the allegations as 'diversionary,' questioning the emergence of such claims amid significant national developments, including proceedings at the International Criminal Court concerning former President Rodrigo Duterte and impeachment cases against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Barbers highlighted the need for the accusers to substantiate their claims through rigorous legal procedures, underscoring the impact of such allegations on reputations and institutions.
