Ex-Hotspot Iligan Reduces Child Cybersex Cases with School Caravan

Iligan city: Once tagged as a hotspot for online child sexual abuse cases, Iligan City has significantly reduced Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Materials (CSAEM) cases through intensified local government efforts since 2022, including a newly launched school and barangay caravan.

According to Philippines News Agency, the city government stated that it launched the caravan on Tuesday to orient the public on laws against OSAEC and CSAEM. The City Social Welfare and Development Office and the Task Force OSAEC will conduct the caravan beginning this week, covering six barangays and their schools.

Iligan City has actively enforced Republic Act 11930 (Anti-OSAEC and Anti-CSAEM Act) through the task force after being tagged a hotspot in the previous decade. In a recent development, the task force and the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) rescued a 14-year-old girl from a perpetrator's location.

ICPO Officer-in-Charge Col. Mario Baquiran Jr. emphasized that abusing children through the internet has become a serious criminal offense. "Perpetrators cannot hide in gadgets and digital transactions. We will continue with our cyber investigations," he said.
