EU Urges Maximum Restraint After US-Israel Attack on Iran

Brussels: The European Union (EU) on Saturday urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and fully respect international law following an attack on Iran by the United States and Israel. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to regional security and stability amidst the escalating tensions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen released a joint statement on the US social media platform X. The statement expressed significant concern over the situation in Iran, emphasizing the EU's ongoing communication with regional partners.

The EU leaders reiterated their dedication to maintaining regional security and stability, highlighting the importance of nuclear safety and the prevention of actions that could escalate tensions or undermine global non-proliferation efforts. The EU has imposed extensive sanctions in response to Iran's actions and the activities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while advocating for diplomatic solutions to address Tehran's nuclear and ballistic programs.

Costa and von der Leyen assured that, in coordination with EU member states, all necessary measures would be implemented to support EU citizens in the region. They called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians, and adhere to international law.

The attack by Israel and the US was initiated early Saturday, citing perceived threats from the Iranian regime. Statements from US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested potential efforts to alter the government in Tehran.

This incident occurred amidst ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear program, with Oman serving as a mediator. After recent talks in Geneva concluded on Thursday, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi expressed optimism about reaching peace following discussions with US Vice President JD Vance.

Previously, Israel had launched a 12-day conflict with Iran last June, with the US joining the effort and targeting three Iranian nuclear sites.
