Escudero Calls for Quick Decision on EDSA Rehabilitation

Manila: Senate President Francis Escudero has stated that one month is sufficient for the government to decide on the long-delayed rehabilitation of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA). He emphasized that a swift evaluation to determine whether to proceed with the project should be possible within this timeframe.

According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero expressed concerns regarding the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) proposed two- to three-year timeline for the rehabilitation. He argued that with the availability of modern construction technologies, such a timeline is excessive. He specifically mentioned the use of advanced methods like quick-drying cement, which can make roads usable within two to three days as opposed to the usual three-week period.

Escudero highlighted the potential impact of prolonged construction on commuters, noting that EDSA is a crucial route for many. He further questioned why the DPWH had not yet implemented temporary solutions, such as a Bailey bridge, to alleviate traffic congestion during the planned repairs of the Guadalupe Bridge, which are scheduled to begin in October.

In previous discussions, other senators have commended President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s decision to suspend the EDSA rehabilitation. They emphasized the importance of enhanced traffic management and the need for wider public consultation to avoid worsening Metro Manila’s already severe congestion.
