Manila: Japan’s health ministry has approved the over-the-counter sale of the emergency contraceptive pill Norlevo by Aska Pharmaceutical Co., the company announced on Monday. This marks the first time an emergency contraceptive pill has been approved for sale without a prescription in the country.
According to Philippines News Agency, the drug is expected to be available as early as this fiscal year, as shared by a person familiar with the matter. Norlevo is effective in preventing pregnancy in approximately 80 percent of cases if taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse.
Significantly, there will be no age limit for purchasing the pill, and parental consent will not be required. However, for safety purposes, buyers will be required to take the drug in the presence of a trained pharmacist.
In June 2024, Aska Pharmaceutical Co. applied for approval from the ministry to make Norlevo available for OTC sale, reflecting a significant shift in the accessibility of emergency contraceptives in Japan.
