Manila: Every year, a handful of Filipinos choose to head out to cemeteries days ahead of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day not only to avoid the Undas crowd rush but also to keep out of the prying eyes of petty criminals.
According to Philippines News Agency, on Thursday, acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. called on the public to exercise maximum vigilance and watch out for these criminals who historically accompany the observance of Undas. Nartatez highlighted that theft, snatching, and robbery are common incidents during Undas, thriving in large, distracted crowds where people let their guard down. He emphasized the importance of being alert in crowded areas like cemeteries, terminals, and public transport hubs.
Nartatez advised the public to avoid carrying large amounts of cash or placing gadgets or mobile phones in back pockets, as such items could easily be targeted by pickpockets in crowded areas. Kelcie Rhayne Laqui, a 25-year-old software engineer from Pasig City, is taking this advice to heart and opting to visit her departed loved ones earlier to avoid both the crowds and criminals. She stressed the importance of being vigilant, avoiding bringing a lot of jewelry or cash, and ensuring someone guards belongings.
Similarly, web designer Jerry Ponce Mandap spoke about the benefits of staying alert before or during Undas. He emphasized the role of vigilance in reducing small crimes and the importance of watching over children and belongings while at the cemetery.
Apart from criminals, the PNP also warned the public against altercations and stressed the prohibition of liquor, weapons, sharp objects, and illegal drugs inside cemeteries. Nartatez mentioned that police intelligence units are tasked to proactively monitor potential criminal groups and threat actors. Over 50,000 police personnel have been deployed nationwide, with the PNP on heightened alert from Oct. 29 to Nov. 3 to deter criminal activity during this year’s Undas.
In anticipation of about 600,000 cemetery-goers, the local government unit (LGU) of Marikina City has begun inspecting cemeteries to ensure an orderly, safe, and peaceful observance. Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro and her husband, Marikina 1st District Rep. Marcy Teodoro, led the inspection of various cemeteries in the city. The city’s Bureau of Fire Protection, local officials, and personnel from the City Parks and Development Office have been deployed to maintain safety and cleanliness.
Mayor Teodoro urged the public to follow guidelines and regulations to ensure safety and security. She highlighted the importance of keeping cemeteries clean and disposing of waste properly. Vendors will be regulated to keep pathways clear and will only be allowed in designated areas. As part of its Undas preparations, the Marikina City government has opened a one-stop shop for candles and flowers at Freedom Park, located in front of the city hall.
