DTI Bicol Launches Geotagging System for Motorists’ Repair Needs

Legazpi city: The Department of Trade and Industry in Bicol (DTI-5) has introduced a geotagging system aimed at assisting motorists in locating service and repair shops across the region, particularly beneficial during the busy Holy Week travel period.

According to Philippines News Agency, DTI-5 Regional Director Dindo Nabol emphasized that the initiative's purpose is to help travelers swiftly find accredited motor and automotive repair shops in emergencies along major highways. In the project's initial phase, 168 service and repair enterprises (SREs) have been geotagged, with half dedicated to motor and automotive repairs.

"This is not a project that I solely own. This is a community project," Nabol stated, sharing that the concept arose from his personal experience two years ago when he faced difficulties finding a repair shop during a breakdown. The geotagging system enables motorists to scan a QR code, which reveals a map of nearby repair shops, complete with directions and estimated travel times.

Promoted as the first of its kind in the Philippines, the system is designed as an emergency tool for travelers, particularly during peak periods like Holy Week. "This is only Phase 1. This is a soft launch. We are still planting the seeds that we hope to grow in the coming days," Nabol added, acknowledging that improvements are needed before a full rollout.

During a system demonstration, Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist Ralph Charles Cu highlighted the system's user-friendly nature. "As long as you know how to use a QR code scanner, you can use the system," Cu assured. Upon scanning, the QR code directs users to a digital map with pinned SRE locations, allowing motorists to select navigation options and find the nearest repair shop.

Currently, the system offers basic information, such as the name and location of establishments, with plans to add contact numbers once partner shops provide consent. Nabol assured that all listed SREs are DTI-accredited, ensuring service quality and reliability.

The DTI is collaborating with stakeholders, including the Philippine National Police and other transport-related offices, to enhance the system's security and explore 24-hour service availability along major routes. While the current version relies on internet access via Google Maps, future enhancements may include offline functionality, integration with emergency hotlines, and additional features.

"This is an advocacy and a campaign for our stakeholders to join us in this important project," Nabol mentioned, expressing optimism about expanding the system nationwide after its development and proven effectiveness in the region. QR codes have been strategically placed at highways, bus terminals, and fast-food stops for easy accessibility by motorists during their travels.
