DSWD Brings Holiday Spirit to Residents of Care Facilities

Quezon city: As part of its annual tradition to bring Yuletide cheer to the residents of its centers and residential care facilities (CRCFs), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is set to hold a series of celebrations, which include gift-giving and a simple ‘salo-salo’ (party).

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian shared details about the planned activities during his visit to the Golden Reception and Action Center for the Elderly and Other Special Cases (GRACES) in Bago Bantay, Quezon City. He emphasized the importance of these celebrations, highlighting that special parties are scheduled on December 24, 25, and 31, as well as January 1, across various care facilities.

Gatchalian chose to prioritize the elderly residents in shelters, acknowledging that this often-neglected sector deserves to feel loved and cared for during the Christmas season, despite being away from their families. He noted the emotional significance of these visits and the gifts they bring, underscoring President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure that shelter residents experience the spirit of Christmas.

Approximately 200 elderly residents of GRACES, including homeless senior citizens and those who are bedridden, received gift packages from Gatchalian. He reflected on the cultural aspect of Filipino families traditionally caring for their elderly at home, expressing a mix of sadness for those neglected but also happiness that the government is stepping in to provide care.
