DPWH Reopens Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela

Isabela: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has reopened the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge to motorists, over a year after the structure collapsed. This development marks a significant step for residents of Cabagan and Santa Maria, who have had to rely on boats to cross the river since the collapse.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the importance of this reopening, noting that President Bongbong Marcos had instructed him to find a temporary solution to ease the difficulties faced by the locals. The bridge has been made accessible to light vehicles less than two months after the construction of a temporary steel bridge connector on its collapsed section commenced.

The DPWH has implemented strict traffic management and load limitations to ensure the safety of residents and motorists crossing the bridge. Foreign consultants have been engaged to study the best approach for repairing the entire bridge comprehensively. Secretary Dizon also mentioned plans to expedite the completion of the permanent bridge structure to accommodate large trucks, improving transportation efficiency in the area.

The bridge initially suffered damage on February 27, 2025, when a loaded dump truck exceeding the 45-ton weight limit attempted to cross, leading to the collapse of a 60-meter span. This incident resulted in injuries to at least six people and damage to several vehicles. Construction of the bridge, which cost PHP1.22 billion, commenced in November 2014 and was completed on February 1, 2025.
