Davao city: Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon on Tuesday assured that the Bucana Bridge here has sustained only minor damage and is passable and safe for motorists. Damage to the bridge was visible after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Mindanao on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dizon stated in an interview with reporters during his inspection of the bridge that they have been reassured by engineers and contractors regarding the minimal nature of the damage. "We are assured by our engineers and contractors that it is very minor," Dizon commented, emphasizing the continued safety of the bridge as vehicles continued to cross it. He further clarified that the underside of the bridge has also been inspected and found to be safe.
Dizon mentioned that some expansion joints on the bridge would require repairs within the next three to five days. He reassured the public by stating, "These are only minor - no problem on the bridge. Tuloy-tuloy lang ang gamit (Just keep using it)."
In addition to addressing the situation at Bucana Bridge, Dizon highlighted the DPWH's commitment to aiding the towns of Jose Abad Santos (JAS) in Davao Occidental and Matanao in Davao del Sur, which were heavily impacted by the earthquake. "We need to repair damages in JAS and the school in Matanao. That is our priority now," he said. He confirmed that coordination efforts with Education Secretary Sonny Angara are underway to expedite the necessary repairs.
