DPWH Collaborates with LGUs to Address Infrastructure Challenges

Naga city: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is working with local government units (LGUs) to resolve problems involving infrastructure projects. In a statement, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said they would ensure that the funds allocated for projects go to the community.

According to Philippines News Agency, the collaboration is in response to the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to partner with LGUs to resolve issues on infra projects in communities. "We really need to work with the mayors because mayors are the ones who know what the problems are. So, we are really going around, the President ordered us to talk to all the mayors," Dizon stated. He highlighted that President Marcos, having served as a governor, understands the challenges faced by local communities.

Dizon conducted an inspection of infrastructure projects and Oplan Kontra Baha (OKB) sites in Naga City with Mayor Leni Robredo on Tuesday. Under the OKB initiative, the DPWH and LGUs are actively cleaning, dredging, and desilting rivers, canals, and other waterways in Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Naga, Cebu, Bacolod, Ilocos, and Maguindanao. These efforts aim to ensure that waterways are clear of debris before the rainy season begins.

Meanwhile, the DPWH plans to collaborate with experts from the Project Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH) and the Quezon City local government to enhance the design and implementation of the Matalahib Creek Pumping Station in Barangays Talayan and Sto. Domingo. These areas are prone to flooding, with waters reaching waist levels during heavy rains and typhoons.

During an inspection of the pumping station with Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Project NOAH Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay, Dizon mentioned, "What we will do is we will provide three options to Project NOAH and Doc Mahar next week-from tearing it down, to putting mobile pumps, to opening the flood barriers." He emphasized the importance of consulting scientists to determine the best solution.
