DOT to Draft Eastern Visayas Cruise Tourism Roadmap

Manila: The Department of Tourism (DOT) in Eastern Visayas is set to draft a comprehensive cruise tourism roadmap, following a steady rise in cruise ship visits to the region in recent years.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOT Eastern Visayas Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes announced that the roadmap is expected to be completed by May of this year. The development process will be undertaken with the assistance of Prof. John Paolo Rivera, a senior research fellow at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies. The roadmap will be based on survey results and aims to guide sustainable growth while maximizing the region's cruise tourism potential.

Tiopes highlighted that Eastern Visayas has become a favored destination for expedition-style cruise itineraries, with frequent visits from luxury and boutique cruise liners. Popular cruise destinations in the region include Kalanggaman Island and Cuatro Islas in Leyte.

The region is also seeing emerging cruise stops in areas such as Capul Island, Biri Island, and Lavezares in Northern Samar; Maripipi Island, Sambawan Island, and Higatangan Island in Biliran; and Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte. Recent developments underscore a growing interest from international cruise operators.

Tiopes noted that a leading French luxury cruise line conducted site assessments across key Eastern Visayas islands for the 2027-2028 season. This move indicates confidence in the region's tourism offerings and its readiness to cater to higher-end market segments.

The proposed roadmap will focus on increasing ship calls, fostering strong community participation, and ensuring environmental stewardship. The DOT emphasized that protecting the region's natural and cultural assets is crucial for securing long-term benefits for host communities.
