DOST-PAGASA Inaugurates New Radar Facility and Synoptic Station to Enhance Weather Monitoring in Iloilo

Iloilo city: The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) has enhanced its weather monitoring capabilities in Iloilo with the inauguration of a new S-band Radar Facility in Barangay Buntatala, Jaro district, and the groundbreaking of a synoptic station at the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan municipality.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. highlighted the advanced features of the new facility, which is equipped with a dual-polarimetric Doppler radar system. This system significantly enhances weather monitoring across Western Visayas and nearby regions, allowing for precise tracking of severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and tropical cyclones. The PHP176.6-million radar can cover a range of 480 kilometers, reaching provinces in Visayas, the southern part of Luzon, and Mindanao.

Solidum emphasized the radar's importance for local government units in decision-making and preparation. The synoptic station at the airport will continuously record essential meteorological data, forming the basis for weather forecasts. PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando noted that the station is crucial for providing continuous and reliable atmospheric observations, vital for airport operations and the safety of the navigational transport sector.

Solidum reiterated the importance of combining technology with skilled scientists, proactive leaders, and an informed public to build resilience. He stressed DOST's commitment to modernizing PAGASA's equipment, enhancing forecasting capabilities, and connecting science with communities.

Mayor Raisa Tre±as underscored the significance of the facilities for public safety, stating that improved localized weather information will aid in making informed decisions to preempt flooding and protect lives and livelihoods. She also expressed optimism for a stronger aviation weather service at the Iloilo airport, which is vital for the region's economic activity, instilling greater confidence among locals and visitors.
