Tacloban: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 8 in Eastern Visayas is set to organize additional job fairs across the region's provinces. This initiative aims to assist workers in the construction industry who have been affected by the deceleration of infrastructure projects due to issues with flood control.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE-8 recently organized a job fair at the Leyte Convention Center and plans to conduct similar events in other provinces in collaboration with local employers. DOLE-8 Director Dax Villaruel emphasized that while the primary focus is on those affected by the termination of infrastructure project contracts, other job seekers are also encouraged to participate.
Director Villaruel highlighted the office's commitment to providing support to construction workers who have faced job losses due to project slowdowns since the previous year. The job fair in Leyte provided 248 job openings, and by 1 p.m. on Thursday, 77 applicants had registered for the event.
The job fair offered positions such as mechanical engineers, civil engineers, electrical engineers, welders, pipe fitters, laborers, drivers, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. The event, named 'Project DAPAT: Construction Job Fair,' saw participation from 11 companies across various provinces and cities in the region.
DAPAT, which stands for DOLE Action Plan and Transition, is a specialized program designed to support displaced workers through job fairs, livelihood support, and other critical services. Director Villaruel stated that DOLE-8 will enhance its prompt and coordinated responses to labor disruptions, working alongside industries and partners to safeguard jobs, assist displaced workers, and support vital economic sectors.
