DOLE Initiates Investigation into Fatal Construction Accident in BGC

Taguig city: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is set to conduct an investigation into an accident at a construction site in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig City last Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma stated that the DOLE-National Capital Region (NCR) has commenced an occupational safety and health (OSH) investigation at the site where one worker, identified as Arvin Loria, was killed and three other construction workers were injured.

“The OSH investigation by DOLE-NCR is ongoing to determine what are the violations, and if a Work Stoppage Order (WSO) needs to be issued,” he said in a telephone interview Tuesday.

At the same time, the DOLE chief also assured assistance to the victims. “DOLE will ensure that benefits due to the family of Mr. Loria will be given, as well as to the other injured workers,” Laguesma said. “In addition, we will make available DOLE programs accessible to the bereaved family and the injured workers,” he added.

The DOLE head expressed sadness over the occurrence of such accidents despite their constant reminder to employers to strictly observe and comply with OSH rules and regulations. “While OSH enforcement lies with the DOLE, the employers are duty-bound to ensure that the safety and health of workers occupy the highest priority in their operations,” he said.

Laguesma vowed to continue enhancing their efforts to ensure compliance with OSH nationwide. The fatality and injuries occurred after an elevator core wall collapsed at the BGC construction site on Oct. 20.
