DOLE Initiates Comprehensive Inspection of High-Rise Constructions in Western Visayas

Iloilo city: The Department of Labor and Employment in Western Visayas (DOLE-6) is spearheading an extensive interagency inspection of all ongoing high-rise construction projects in the region. This strategic initiative is part of efforts to ensure occupational safety and health standards are upheld across the construction industry.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jorge Ferraris II, the officer-in-charge of DOLE-6 Technical Support and Services Division, highlighted during a press conference that this inspection drive is a proactive measure instituted by Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino. The decision follows a recent building collapse in Angeles City, Pampanga, underscoring the need for stringent safety protocols.

The inspections are being conducted with the collaboration of several government bodies, including the Social Security System (SSS), Pag-IBIG, Department of Public Works and Highways, Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), and local government units. This collaborative effort will initially target five high-rise buildings in each province, with the exception of Guimaras, which currently has only one ongoing construction project.

Ferraris emphasized the potential for immediate action if any imminent dangers are identified during inspections. "If there is an imminent danger upon inspection, our regional director will issue a work stoppage order," he stated.

DOLE-6 Regional Director Sixto Rodriguez Jr. elaborated that this initiative goes beyond regular labor inspections that typically focus on compliance with general labor standards. The involvement of other agencies allows for a broader assessment of compliance, extending beyond DOLE's usual purview.

Rodriguez noted the value of involving multiple agencies, as it enables comprehensive inspections that can identify a range of violations, including those related to labor registration with SSS, PhilHealth, and other agencies. By having these agencies participate, establishments can receive direct assistance in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements.
