DOLE Continues Employment Aid Amid Middle East Conflict Impact

Manila: An official of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Monday said the government continues to provide emergency employment assistance to workers affected by the impact of the Middle East conflict. Assistant Secretary Lennard Serrano, DOLE spokesperson, highlighted the ongoing efforts to support displaced workers through various programs.

According to Philippines News Agency, one of these programs is the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD). Serrano explained that TUPAD aims to provide emergency employment assistance for vulnerable, marginalized, and displaced workers, with a particular focus on those requiring immediate support. In the context of the Middle East situation, the directly affected sector includes drivers of public utility vehicles such as jeepneys, transport network vehicle service (TNVS), tricycles, and buses.

Serrano emphasized that TUPAD is a continuous initiative, with PHP1.2 billion allocated for transport industry workers. However, the program's implementation extends to other sectors impacted by the crisis. He also noted that the jobs provided under TUPAD are evolving to be more meaningful and beneficial to the community, moving beyond mere street sweeping to offer more impactful roles.

For the first quarter of 2026, the agency has successfully delivered emergency employment through TUPAD and livelihood assistance via the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program to a total of 110,106 vulnerable workers. The financial commitment for these initiatives amounts to PHP753.69 million.

Serrano reiterated the agency's commitment to supporting those affected by the crisis, encouraging individuals in need to reach out to DOLE offices for assistance. He affirmed DOLE's solidarity with the challenges faced by the community and its ongoing dedication to providing support through its programs.
