DOJ to Push Independent Probe on Senate Gunfire, Bato’s Escape

Manila: Department of Justice (DOJ) spokesperson Polo Martinez on Wednesday said the department will proceed with its own investigation into the Senate's shooting incident and alleged escape of Sen. Ronald 'Bato' dela Rosa, despite probes to be conducted by other government agencies. 'The fact-finding investigation being conducted by the DOJ panel of prosecutors into the events that transpired at the Senate from May 11 to 14, 2026, will proceed independently of any investigation or proceeding before another agency,' Martinez said in a message to reporters.

According to Philippines News Agency, the panel of prosecutors remains open to receiving any evidence 'that may assist in its investigation.' Martinez emphasized that the findings will be based on its own independent assessment of the evidence submitted and gathered in the course of its investigation.

Tindig Pilipinas earlier filed a complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman, seeking to hold Senate President Allan Peter Cayetano, Sen. Robinhood Padilla, and suspended Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Mao Aplasca criminally liable for obstruction of justice following Dela Rosa's escape from authorities on May 14.

The International Criminal Court unsealed the arrest warrant issued against Dela Rosa on May 11, 2026, after naming him as an indirect co-perpetrator in a common plan to commit crimes against humanity in relation to the blood war on drugs by former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Dela Rosa has sought a temporary restraining order, but the Supreme Court rejected the lawmaker's plea.
