Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) is bolstering its public awareness efforts regarding leprosy, emphasizing that the disease is curable and highlighting the significance of early treatment in preventing its transmission. In a public advisory, the DOH informed that leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is treatable, and free medication is available at government health centers.
According to Philippines News Agency, early symptoms of leprosy include skin lesions, nerve damage, nerve thickening, vision loss, persistent stuffy nose, nosebleeds, and bumps and nodules on the face and earlobes. Advanced symptoms may lead to painless ulcers, permanent nerve damage, and physical deformities.
The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has assured members diagnosed with Hansen's disease that financial support is accessible through its benefit package, which covers up to PHP17,160 for treatment in accredited health facilities. The package can be utilized at Levels 1, 2, and 3 hospitals nationwide, helping to alleviate the financial burden of hospitalization and management.
PhilHealth has noted that early consultation and proper treatment are essential not only for preventing complications but also for halting the spread of the disease. The DOH has encouraged the public to seek accurate information about leprosy and to refrain from discriminating against affected individuals.
Communities have also been urged to support those undergoing treatment with understanding and compassion, as acceptance and awareness are crucial for effective disease control.
