Manila: The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) on Tuesday reminded the public to observe a safe and healthy Holy Week as large crowds are expected to gather in churches and other public places. In a health advisory, DOH-5 encouraged taking up precautionary measures to prevent illnesses and accidents during the Lenten season.
According to Philippines News Agency, to avoid heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, the agency advised the public to stay hydrated, use protective gear like hats or umbrellas when outdoors, avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks, and limit exposure to extreme heat. DOH emphasized maintaining a healthy lifestyle like eating nutritious food, reducing salt and fat intake, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress through relaxation techniques.
Motorists and commuters were reminded to prioritize road safety by wearing seatbelts or helmets, refraining from using mobile phones while driving, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol, observing speed limits, and adhering to traffic laws. In line with Drowning Prevention Month, the agency promoted the "5Bs" strategy: Constant supervision of children near water, use of life vests or flotation devices, avoiding alcohol consumption, installing barriers in homes near water sources, and practicing bystander intervention during emergencies.
For penitents, DOH-5 strongly discouraged participation in self-flagellation and other practices that may lead to tetanus and infections. Those joining the Visita Iglesia (tradition of visiting seven churches) are advised to wear comfortable clothing, bring safe food and drinking water, keep an eye on children, and dispose of waste properly.
DOH-5 reiterated its call for the public to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting their health, emphasizing that a safe and meaningful observance of Holy Week contributes to a healthier community.
