DOE: MTerra Solar, Battery Capacity to Boost Power Supply

Manila: The Department of Energy (DOE) on Monday said the energization of 250 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and 450 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage by MTerra Solar strengthens the country's energy security.

According to Philippines News Agency, "Every megawatt of domestic capacity that we bring into the grid strengthens our ability to withstand external shocks, protect consumers, and preserve system reliability," DOE Secretary Sharon Garin stated. The energization initiative comes amid ongoing Middle East conflicts, highlighting the strategic necessity and national imperative to accelerate renewable energy and storage development.

Terra Solar Philippines Inc. (MTerra Solar) has successfully energized the first 250 MW of its solar capacity. This capacity is now operational, contributing to the increasing demand for reliable and clean energy. Additionally, MTerra Solar has activated the first tranche of its battery energy storage system (BESS), which delivers up to 450 MWh to the grid at night, marking it as the largest operational BESS in the country.

The DOE emphasized that the added capacity provides immediate grid support, enhancing flexibility and reliability while decreasing the country's dependence on imported fuels. The agency remains committed to fast-tracking renewable energy and storage projects in collaboration with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, the Energy Regulatory Commission, and other relevant stakeholders.
