DOE Chief Highlights Natural Gas’ Role Following Major Malampaya Discovery

Manila: Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Sharon Garin emphasized the importance of natural gas within the country's energy framework after the discovery of a significant reservoir at Malampaya East 1 (MAE-1), situated approximately 5 kilometers east of the current Malampaya field.

According to Philippines News Agency, the reservoir is estimated to hold around 98 billion cubic feet of gas, with an initial test flow rate of 60 million cubic feet per day, accompanied by associated condensate. This discovery represents a key achievement in the Malampaya Phase 4 Drilling Campaign, which also encompasses the Camago and Bagong Pag-asa wells under Service Contract 38, managed by Prime Energy Resources Development B.V.

The accomplishment was realized by a fully Filipino-led team, including UC38, PNOC Exploration Corporation, and Prime Oil and Gas Inc. Secretary Garin remarked, "This milestone is a testament to the world-class capability of Filipino engineers in securing our country's energy future." She further noted the role of natural gas as a "critical bridge in our energy mix," which supports power reliability as the nation advances in renewables, energy storage, and grid enhancements.

Garin also stated, "We will pursue this opportunity with discipline: maximizing value for Filipinos, upholding environmental stewardship, and ensuring that every milestone strengthens our national interest."

In a separate statement, Prime Energy indicated that the discovery has increased the field's remaining recoverable volumes by an estimated 30 percent. Prime Energy described the gas discovery as a triumph for the Filipino people, reiterating their commitment to revitalizing the indigenous natural gas sector and fulfilling their promise to the President and the nation.

The company expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for extending Service Contract 38 and enacting the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act, which fosters stability and confidence for ongoing gas exploration.
