Mandaluyong City:The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is advocating for enhanced protections for Filipino migrant fishers, who are among the most vulnerable in the sea-based workforce.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DMW emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly with ASEAN countries, to ensure fair and ethical recruitment practices. This was highlighted during a recent meeting focusing on the ASEAN Declaration on Fair, Ethical, and Sustainable Recruitment, which addressed protection measures for migrant workers in the region.
Assistant Secretary Levinson Alcantara underscored the department's commitment to safeguarding migrant fishers from abuse and exploitation, emphasizing the need for partnerships with both domestic and ASEAN stakeholders. Assistant Secretary Jerome Alcantara further elaborated on initiatives to uphold the human rights of these workers.
The DMW also highlighted the necessity for clear regulations regarding the licensing and monitoring of recruitment agencies to prevent illegal practices and labor violations against overseas Filipino workers. Daniel Awigra, co-founder of Better Engagement Between East and Southeast Asia (BEBESEA), contributed insights on human rights and migrant worker protection.
The discussions aimed at fostering regional cooperation to ensure Filipino migrant fishers are recruited and employed under fair terms, with their rights and welfare protected throughout their work tenure.
