Manila: Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon expressed frustration over the slow progress of the flood control project in Manila, particularly at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) on Taft Avenue. He warned that the project, which was found to be only 16 percent done, may be cancelled if there is no changes or progress. "If it doesn't deliver this June, cancel it," Dizon said during the inspection on Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the repair and rehabilitation of the buildings started in December 2024, with a target completion date set for June 15, 2026. Dizon expressed concern that, after one and a half years, the project remains only 16 percent complete. The contractor responsible for the project is a joint venture of Edison Development and Construction Inc. and FS Co Builders and Supply.
During the inspection, it was revealed that the contractor of the project is related to a friend of fugitive former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co's sister. Dizon emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "The President said, our people deserve better than this. PGH is very important. You can see how many people come here every day."
In addition to the flood control project, Dizon also inspected other unfinished infrastructure projects at the hospital to address the deficiencies in facilities in public hospitals.
