Manila: Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla will meet with the national leaders of Tau Gamma Phi after a college freshman in Cavite died due to alleged hazing. At a press briefing on Thursday, Remulla said the meeting will take place on Friday morning.
According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla expressed his concern by recalling a similar incident during his tenure as governor. He referred to the hazing death of chemical engineering student John Mattew Salilig in 2023, whose body was discovered buried in a vacant lot in Imus, Cavite.
Remulla stated his intention to address the persistent issues within the fraternity's practices, saying, "It seems that Tau Gamma has had one too many, so I'll be talking with their national leadership to put an end to this cycle of violence."
This initiative comes in response to the recent death of 19-year-old maritime student Kenneth Alcedo, who allegedly sustained fatal injuries during hazing rites. Alcedo was taken to a hospital in General Trias on March 1 by three individuals who initially claimed he was a hit-and-run victim. Hospital staff later informed police that he was already dead upon arrival.
Police are currently searching for 21 individuals linked to the incident, including nine suspects and other persons of interest.
