Dumaguete: The Department of Education (DepEd) here on Monday began a weeklong orientation and familiarization activity called 'opening block' as public schools across the country opened the Academic Year 2026-2027.
According to Philippines News Agency, DepEd-Dumaguete Assistant Superintendent Juditha Mapue stated that the first week of classes will focus on activities designed to help learners acquaint themselves with the new trimester system and their school environments. This initiative is part of DepEd's strategy to ease students into the academic year without the immediate pressure of lessons.
Mapue emphasized that while no formal lessons will be conducted during this period, students are required to watch films on anti-bullying, a measure introduced in response to previous incidents. She also mentioned that the first day of classes proceeded peacefully, with police officers assisting school officials in maintaining order.
The DepEd city division anticipates the current enrollment rate of 22,000 learners to increase to as many as 25,000, as schools continue to accommodate late enrollees and transferees. Meanwhile, the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office reported no significant incidents on the first day. Capt. Stephen Jay Polinar, the office's spokesperson, confirmed that while no assistance desks are set up within schools, uniformed officers are present and mobile patrols frequently monitor the area.
