Dumaguete city: The Department of Education (DepEd) Dumaguete City Schools Division is gearing up for the implementation of the trimester system for the academic year 2026-2027, an official said on Wednesday. Dr. Juditha Mapue, DepEd city division assistant superintendent, shared insights on the new system, which involves restructuring the academic calendar from four quarters into three terms.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Mapue emphasized that the trimester system aims to reduce teacher fatigue and enhance learning competencies for students. The transition includes training sessions for teachers, set to commence after the Holy Week observance next week. In addition, the preparation of modules and other learning materials is underway, ensuring they are ready before the new school year begins in mid-June.
Mapue highlighted that the school year will now return to its original schedule, with classes starting in June. Previously, the Philippines had adjusted the academic calendar to begin in August to align with international standards, a change that had led to disruptions in learning. To facilitate a smooth transition, the Dumaguete City Schools Division plans to hold graduation ceremonies for public schools on March 30 and 31.
The agency aims to optimize the school calendar, ensuring a seamless shift to the new academic schedule starting in mid-June.
