DENR Calls for Expansion of Women-Led Climate Initiatives

Quezon city:<Text>

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has underscored the critical role of women in fostering resilient communities and sustainable livelihoods. It is urging government agencies, community leaders, and program partners to enhance and expand women-led climate adaptation initiatives.

According to Philippines News Agency, Environment Secretary Raphael Lotilla highlighted the importance of involving women in climate action during the opening of the 2026 National Women's Month celebrations at the DENR in Quezon City on March 2. Lotilla emphasized that resilience is not a gender-neutral concept, stating, "Adaptation that ignores women's voices is adaptation that fails."

Lotilla urged stakeholders to recognize women's significant contributions to climate change adaptation and to translate this recognition into tangible actions. He called for investment in women-led projects, amplifying women's voices in policy and decision-mak ing, and ensuring that adaptation measures genuinely reflect the priorities of those most affected.

He further highlighted women's contributions across various communities, including coastal, upland, and indigenous areas. These contributions encompass the protection of mangroves, watershed management, seed diversity preservation, and the sustenance of local livelihoods. Lotilla noted that DENR programs have consistently integrated gender-responsive approaches, engaging women in community-based adaptation planning and partnering with grassroots and indigenous organizations.

Lotilla also cited the ongoing DENR exhibit, 'Resilient Roots: Scaling Adaptation Through Women's Leadership', which showcases local innovations by women climate leaders. He stressed that supporting women's leadership is crucial for strengthening communities, protecting natural resources, and reducing vulnerability to climate risks. Through these initiatives, the DENR aims to foster a more inclusive, clim ate-resilient future.
