Kathmandu: The death toll from last month's flash floods and mudslides at the Nepal-China border has surpassed 1,400 in Nepal.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 1,403 individuals have died in the disaster, while 13,742 have been successfully rescued. The calamity has left 6,150 people missing, including 587 foreigners.

On the Chinese side of the border, the death toll stands at 43 with 519 individuals missing, including 261 foreigners in Tibet, known as the Xizang autonomous region by Beijing. The disaster occurred on August 26 when a glacier on Nepal's Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet).

The glacier's fracture led to an ice-rock avalanche that transformed into a massive debris flow, impacting valleys along the border. Floodwaters and mudslides severely affected Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Kavre districts, as well as the Kathmandu Valley.

The disaster also resulted in the burial of the Gyirong border crossing in Xizang.
