Dairy Sector Prepares for El Ni±o Impact with Strategic Measures

Quezon city: The National Dairy Authority (NDA) has announced that intensified efforts are underway to prepare the dairy sector for the anticipated strong El Ni±o. NDA Administrator Marcus Antonius Andaya highlighted that the agency is in close coordination with local dairy farmers to implement necessary mitigation measures.

According to Philippines News Agency, Andaya emphasized the proactive steps taken by the NDA, stating that dairy farmers across the country have been educated on how to brace for the impending El Ni±o. This announcement was made during the opening of World Milk Day at the Farmer's Plaza Activity Center in Araneta, Quezon City. Preparations include nationwide information campaigns and securing sufficient feed supplies, as well as offering assistance and loans to farmers.

Dairy farmers are currently focused on boosting their feed inventories in anticipation of El Ni±o's full impact. A primary concern is ensuring a steady feed supply for dairy animals during the dry conditions. Farmers are actively storing reserves like corn silage, with NDA personnel in provinces closely monitoring the situation.

To mitigate the effects of extreme heat, the NDA is providing assistance and soft loans aimed at safeguarding the welfare of dairy animals, particularly imported breeds not accustomed to high temperatures. Measures such as supplying electric fans, showers, and appropriate beddings are being implemented to enhance cow comfort.

Andaya also revealed plans for the arrival of 800 Holstein and Jersey dairy cattle breeds in August, with an additional 800 expected later in the year, as part of the NDA's efforts to strengthen the sector's resilience against climatic challenges.
