Dagupan City on Alert as Heat Index Hits Dangerous 44°C

Dagupan city: The heat index in the province of Pangasinan hit a dangerous 44°C on Wednesday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Health (DOH) Ilocos regional office issued urgent warnings to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat cramps. Health officials advised the public to stay indoors during the peak of the sun and to schedule outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon.

'Keep hydrated! Drink plenty of water,' the DOH advised, while also recommending that residents wear light clothing and carry umbrellas or other forms of sun protection. Meanwhile, Mayor Belen Fernandez confirmed that the city has implemented an "El Ni±o Watch" to prepare for the potential impacts of extreme heat.

Her primary concerns include the protection of the local milkfish (bangus) industry and the prevention of grass fires, which become more prevalent as temperatures soar. 'I hope the bangus industry will not be affected,' Fernandez said, adding that she has instructed barangay captains to prioritize early grass cutting to mitigate fire risks.

The city government continues to distribute grass cutters to local villages to assist in these preventive measures.
