Davao: The Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) is spearheading an initiative to help Indigenous Peoples transform their ancestral lands into productive farms through its Palayamanan integrated farming program. This program is being implemented at the Davao Regional Upland Agriculture Research Station (DARUARS), a 400-hectare site donated by five clan farmers’ associations.
According to Philippines News Agency, DA-11 Research Division chief Melanie Provido highlighted that the initiative combines rice, vegetable, and livestock farming as a sustainable model tailored for upland and tribal landscapes. The collaborative effort involves concerned government agencies working together for the development of indigenous tribes in the area.
DARUARS chief Jessel Cardines emphasized the importance of respecting indigenous culture and knowledge as the foundation for development. Cardines noted that by providing inputs, training, and support directly to Indigenous Peoples’ farmer associations, the program is not only boosting productivity but also fostering dignity, self-reliance, and hope for future generations.
As part of the program, DA-11 has distributed various livelihood inputs to participating associations, including native piglets, vegetable seed kits, cacao seedlings, and fertilizer. This comprehensive approach aims to equip the communities with the necessary resources to enhance agricultural productivity and improve their quality of life.
